This term our focus is: ‘Living things have a variety of external features and live in different
places.’ Students have explored and found small animals on the school grounds and in their backyard. Students have shared their findings and graphed their class' results.
Week 4: The year 1 students created observational drawings of
live earthworms.
Each student observed a live earthworm and made close up drawings of it. Each student then created a scientific diagram labelling different parts of an earthworm.

Week 5: The students discovered many facts about insects.
Did you know that an insect has 6 legs, 3 body parts (head, thorax and abdomen), antennae, compound eyes and most have wings.
The students observed a range of real (not alive) and plastic insects and created a scientific diagram on one.

Then the year 1 students created scientific diagrams of plants (and even created 'Lift the flap' books about parts of a plant - displayed outside the science room.)

Week 7: The year 1 students worked in small groups, brainstormed, recorded and shared their ideas about habitats.
Week 8-10: During week 8, the year 1 students planned and designed their mini beast (and habitat). From week 9 students began creating their mini beasts out of natural materials, due to be completed by Wednesday 1st April, (week 10) to be displayed at the Science Open Night (need more info? check under April Events). Take a sneak preview of some mini beasts:
