This term's focus Is:

including by mixing."
Week 1: The year 2 students shared and recorded their ideas about different pictures of mixtures. They then individually recorded a word web about mixtures. Check out some examples:

In triads, the year 2 students investigated how to create mixtures using the solids, salt, sugar and flour, and liquid, water. They first used a magnifying glass to identify and record the texture, smell and colour of each solid. They then mixed the solids with water and described and reflected on what happened.Which mixtures dissolved?
Week 4-5 : The students worked hard at creating their pop stick bridges for Highgate School's Science Expo. Check out more photos under the EVENT August 2015 tab.
Week 6:Students investigated mixtures that create a chemical reaction. Vinegar and bicarbonate soda was added to water and red food colouring. This experiment recreated a volcano model. Students discussed and recorded their observations. Check out some samples:
Week 7: The year 2 students investigated what materials things are made of. For example, windows are made of glass. Firstly, the students individually labelled a home picture from a catalogue. Then they created a labelled diagram of the Science room. Lastly, in pairs, students experimented with a tub of materials and identified what materials are transparent, flexible, waterproof, etc. Check out some work examples:
Week 8: The year 2 students investigated what combined materials things are made of. For example, scissors are made of plastic and metal. In pairs, they looked at a variety of objects (umbrella, toy car, peg, stapler, tape dispenser) and identified the materials the object is made of and gave reasons why these materials were chosen.
After watching the first part of the 'Cinderella' story, the students then designed 3 pairs of shoes for Cinderella to wear to the ball. What materials will they choose? Other students in the class then had to choose their favourite. Which one is yours?
